The Valencian firm have reaffirmed their commitment to the Association that promotes healthy eating based on the consumption of fruit and vegetables with the incorporation of Benito Orihuel on to the “5 a day” Scientific Committee.
The Association, “5 a day”, was created more than twenty years ago with the purpose of improving food literacy within the population and to promote the increased consumption of fruit and vegetable produce. Citrosol, as a company that pursues these same objectives, demonstrated their affirmation to the “5 a day” principles with the incorporation of Benito Orihuel, the Valencian firm’s Postharvest Advisor and holder of a PhD in Chemistry, on to the Association’s Scientific Committee. His incorporation being at the behest of the presidency of said Committee.
“5 a day” pursues the objective that “consumers should incorporate at least 5 servings of, preferably local, fresh fruit and vegetables into their daily diet, within the framework of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle”. To achieve this, it is essential that said products reach the consumer with their full flavor and at the highest quality possible, which is where Citrosol come in, being specialists in maintaining freshness and extending the life of fruit and vegetable produce, thus contributing to the reduction of food wastage.
Benito Orihuel and Pilar Errea, an agricultural researcher at CITA, joined the “5 a day” Scientific Committee at a meeting where face-to-face gatherings were resumed after two years of only virtual meetings. One topic that took up a large part of the meeting was a discussion about the effect on the Association’s messages and campaigns brought about by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition’s (AESAN) new “Healthy and sustainable dietary recommendations” and the agreement to offer a collaboration with the Committee, as well as to develop proposals to achieve greater impact from the messages related to the consumption of fruit and vegetables from those recommendations.
